ELEVATE 2020 - Maximizing Value: Using Automation to Assess and Compare Funding Proposals for Housing and Homeless Services
Shelter, Support and Housing Administration (SSHA) is a division of the City of Toronto. SSHA administers a range of social and affordable housing programs, emergency shelter services and support services for people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. SSHA launched their Platform3 system in January 2020 to manage over $60 million of grants for housing and homelessness support services, distributed to more than 100 non-profit organizations that deliver over 250 projects every year. With funding available for a wide range of services delivering an equally wide variety of outcomes, SSHA decided to use the SmartSimple platform to create an automated assessment tool to compare the value of disparate services proposed in funding applications. Now, SSHA is able to identify priority service areas and target populations, and SmartSimple technology calculates a "cost per unit of service" that can be ranked and compared objectively. Learn about how the idea of increasing comparability to make better funding decisions was operationalized, and the lessons learned from transitioning to automated application assessment.
